How to calculate the real cost of a hotel

The advertised nightly rate is only the starting point. The real hotel cost includes the room total, hotel taxes, mandatory property or destination fees, parking, breakfast, airport transportation, and any other fixed costs required by the stay.

A lower nightly rate can become the more expensive stay when resort fees, parking charges, or airport transfers are added. A higher room rate can also be competitive if it replaces costs you would otherwise pay separately, such as breakfast or transportation.

Room rate vs total hotel price

Use the total stay cost to compare hotels, then look at effective cost per night, cost per traveler, and cost per traveler per night. Those views are more useful than room rate alone when one hotel has mandatory fees and another includes more of the trip cost in the rate.

Refundable and flexible rates should be shown separately as a premium. The calculator can tell you how much extra the flexible option costs, but it does not decide whether flexibility is worth it for your trip.
